Þuríður formaður (1777–1863) was an extraordinary woman for her time. She went to sea at a young age and captained successful fishing vessels for many years. She fought for her own rights and those of others in the courts, and played a significant role in bringing the notorious Kambur robbery to light. Yet despite her exceptional courage, selflessness, and unwavering resilience, she could not escape the harsh realities of nineteenth-century life.
She died a pauper, far removed from the dignity she had earned.
This is a moving and vividly told account of a truly remarkable woman who refused to be constrained by tradition or those in positions of power.
“A meticulously researched and exceptionally well-written book that offers a fascinating insight into nineteenth-century Icelandic society. At the same time, it paints an unforgettable portrait of Thurídur the Captain — a courageous, independent, and resilient woman who deserves to be a role model.”
Eliza Reid, author of The Sprakkar and former First Lady of Iceland
“Margaret Willson combines historical sources with compelling storytelling in this moving account of Thurídur the Captain, one of Iceland’s most remarkable seafarers. At last, this extraordinary woman receives the recognition she deserves.”
Gísli Pálsson, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Iceland
