After repeated miscarriages, Edda longs for a change. She has grown weary of her job, her apartment, dinner parties with friends, and their endless pregnancy announcements—of everything. When she discovers a small island in the East Fjords advertised for sale, she convinces Atli that they could begin a new life there.

On Varpey, everything flourishes: the cliffs teem with birds, the slopes are covered in wild berries, and the surrounding sea is rich with fish. Hildur Knútsdóttir is one of Iceland’s most acclaimed authors of young adult fiction and has also achieved international success with her novellas for adult readers, particularly in the English-speaking world. The Darkness Between the Stars was named one of the ten best horror books of 2024 by The New York Times and has been nominated for both the Dublin Literary Award and the World Fantasy Award. Film rights to that novel, as well as Irpa, have been acquired by international production companies.
