The parish and county descriptions have their origins in an extensive survey organized by the Icelandic Literary Society (Hið íslenska bókmenntafélag) in the 1830s. Questionnaires were sent to priests and district commissioners throughout the country, requesting detailed accounts of the natural environment, landscape, livelihoods, occupations, education, morals, health, and antiquities.
The aim was to produce a comprehensive picture of Icelandic society at that time. Many of these descriptions have previously been published in book form, but most are now out of print.
